The Hologic Horizon DXA Scan provides "Gold Standard" comprehensive assessment to measure body composition and bone density. It provides you body fat percentage, total lean mass, bone density, limb comparison for muscle imbalance detection, visceral fat and more.

In particular, an elevated measure of visceral fat (fat collection surrounding internal organs) is associated with medical disorders such as metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and several malignancies including prostate, breast and colorectal cancers. Regular quantitative assessment of visceral fat is important for evaluating the potential risk of development of these pathologies, as well as providing an accurate means to measure the success of your new lifestyle health plan.

What To Know Before Your DEXA Scan:

When you enter the building, take two right turns, and you will see room 20.


  • Please wear comfortable clothes without metal. Be mindful of zippers and buttons. You will be asked to remove all jewelry.


  • Do not take calcium supplements the day of the test. 


  • You should be fasting for 5 hours. If you must eat, the total content should be less than 500 grams.


  • You should have an empty bladder for the scan.


  • Any removable medical devices must be removed.


  • Exercise can affect variability in measurement. No exercise for 8 hours prior to scan.


  • Do not schedule to have any IV contrast for other radiography for 2 weeks before your appointment.


  • Any possibility of pregnancy? If so, you must take a home pregnancy test prior to. 


  • You are welcome to bring any prior DEXA results to review.
